Very nice and great place for every type of travelers. Travelling by boat and gondolas are quite an experience. Love the canals. I could spend hours just sitting at a restaurant and stares at the boats going back and forth across the canal. I think it's best to go on summer and winter, because my friends who went on spring and fall said that it's not good. I personally went on winter, and my friend who went on summer feels the same with me.
Weather, crowds, or good deals? If you come in late winter, you can stick around for Carnivale in late February. Late spring and early summer are the best times for weather in Venice, but are also the highest tourist seasons. Overall, for the best of weather and prices, come to Venice during the fall. The weather is warm during the days with just a nip of chill, and the tourist season is descending, which means prices will fall. But be prepared for the high water season during the fall when some flooding may occur. Piazza San Marco and the nearby surrounding area is a tourist hotspot, so avoid looking at hotels in that area. Another great area is the artsy area of Dorsoduro, in the southwest part of town. One great option for upscale accommodations at a price you can afford is the San Cassiano Hotel, in a great spot right on the canal. The Hotel alla Salute is another great budget option, and it's in walking distance to everything you want to see but away from the main, crowded tourist area. Use a website that shows you your hotel options by location and by price, so you can check out many different options before making your decision.
