Scunthorpe, conversely, derives from Skuma, a local landowner of Viking extraction. The Norse etymology is ironic given that the town is nowadays infamous for the quintessentially Anglo-Saxon noun embedded within it. Happily, AAA Taxis swerved to our rescue, and we arrived at the restaurant with time to spare.
Winteringham Fields, N Lincs, restaurant review: fine dining and soft furnishings
My husband purchased a six course tasting menu for two from Groupon for a bargain price. The building and grounds are beautiful and we were met by a member of staff who welcomed us warmly. The receptionist was talking on the phone as we walked through the reception, but even she smiled and waved at us. Drinks were served in lovely comfy armchairs and I had an extra starter, blinis my favourite. The food was scrumptious, the staff attentive and knowledgeable and the surroundings lush.
There was even a mini chair for my handbag I'd not brought one, however. I'm trying to think of my favourite course, but I can't they were all gorgeous. Clever, tasty and beautifully presented. We even ordered the cheese course for afters! We visited in the daytime so it was a little quiet and I felt the urge to whisper. The next time I go will be in the evening for a bit atmosphere.
Our waiters were handsome devils too! Thank you for your comments, and for taking the time to write such a complementary review. It's a pleasure know you enjoyed not only your meal but also the surroundings of our beautiful restaurant. I do apologise that you felt you had to whisper but you are correct our lunch service provides much more of an easy-going, relaxed atmosphere, compared to our dinner service.
Once again thank you for your review, and I hope to welcome you back to Winteringham Fields in the not too distant future. Regards Colin McGurran. I booked a table at Winteringham fields to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had the six course surprise taster lunch menu. The food was immaculately presented with clever twists. Delicate yet rich flavour combinations and food I would not otherwise have tried or selected from a menu.
A very different dining experience. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and would return again for a special occasion. The chocolate and raspberry gateaux was particularly delicious! The staff were very friendly, polite and efficient, with suitable gaps between courses. The atmosphere was relaxed and I particularly enjoyed the coffee taken in the lounge afterwards.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a complimentary review following your anniversary celebration, as comments such as this are a pleasure to read. I very much look forward to welcoming you back to Winteringham Fields in the not too distant future. We had the taster menu that was on groupon 8 courses which was such an experience I will never forget ,the normal lunch menu seems reasonable priced and will be defiantly going back.
We had nibbles on the terrace before we went in and the whole experience was magical. Thank you very much for your review. I am very pleased that you enjoyed your visit and I do hope that we see you back again in the not too distant future. How lucky are we to have such an amazingly wonderful place to come to in Lincolnshire, from the moment you arrive the staff are attentive and helpful. As for the food WOW what a pleasure, the work thats gone into each dish is like a work of art, then you have the flavours that sent your pallet into overdrive beyond words.
The dessert then was to die for!!!! Your comments are extremely kind, and I thank you sincerely for posting them. I do hope your husband reads your list very carefully, as it would be a pleasure to welcome you back to Winteringham Fields and have you join me in the kitchen. Our first visit and we were not disappointed from the moment we arrived. We stayed in the Turpin room which is a few minutes walk away from the main building. The room facilities were superb and nothing was too much trouble.
We chose the Surprise menu and had the wine package. The food was amazing, we have been fortunate to eat in Michelin starred restaurants and this restaurant is an absolute gem and deserves a star. We felt so relaxed and were welcomed by the staff as 'part of the family'. Well done Colin and Bex you have created a wonderful homely ambience, a special thank you to Sandra for the 'tour' after breakfast we will definitely be back. Thank you for posting such a lovely review.

Ferran Adria, the modernist chef of the legendary El Bulli in the hills far north of Barcelona, once said that a great meal should begin with a long journey; that the struggle to reach the restaurant could only improve the experience. That may be true of El Bulli, but few journeys reward the effort.

Winteringham Fields (Bed and breakfast) (UK) deals
The food was technically very creative, but I found some of the courses not particularly tasty and it left me with indigestion. Mackerel is not a favourite of mine and neither is smoked haddock. Also, I explained that I would not want to eat lots of cheese late at night before we sat down and they said they would provide an alternative course. However, the service was bad, because they never did offer any alternative, but just left me sitting watching my partner eat. So all in all, not a great night out. Had lunch here for my birthday in December. We have had dinner here on a few occasions but this was the first time for lunch. Food and service as good as ever, having a December birthday it is sometimes hard to find a place that doesn't drop the standard because they can churn out pre-Christmas lunch or dinner to the masses. We were not disappointed.

Winteringham Fields - A star reborn
Colin McGurran bought restaurant Winteringham Fields, which had two Michelin stars, and promptly lost them. Now, 14 years on, he has won one back. Catherine Scott paid him a visit. McGurran bought Winteringham Fields when he was just 28 years old. At the time it was a two Michelin star restaurant serving classical French fine dining dishes under the ownership of Germain and Annie Schwab. But within two years they lost the head chef and many of the staff — and one star, followed swiftly by the second. People just rang up and cancelled. Things became very tight indeed. The young chef had to make a decision and quickly.

Very much enjoyed our lunch here, they were happy to offer the full 8 course menu at lunch which was good to see.

Chef-patron Colin McGurran has a distinctive style, which has, this year, been recognised by Michelin. All the typical stuff is there — the powders and foams, the neurotic attentiveness to detail — but his food is a shade more ingredient-led and less about technique — and, consequently maybe, bigger on flavour. Expect day Dexter beef tartare from their own farm , served with a dollop of caviar and a squidge of citrus, and held loosely together by a lovely beef jelly.
